Linux creator Linus Torvalds released the official 2.6.5 kernel saying:
"[Some] more architecture updates, and a few fixes for silly broken stuff in -rc3. And an ALSA update.
"And I'll be offline for a week, so have fun with this, and if you get the shakes because you want to compile a new kernel every day, there's always the -mm tree to play with while I'm gone.. "
2.6.5-rc1 [story], 2.6.5-rc2 [story] and 2.6.5-rc3 [story] leading up to this release saw a number of merges from Andrew Morton [interview]'s -mm tree [story], numerous subsystem updates, and several architecture updates. Read on for the full changelog.

Soma more architecture updates, and a few fixes for silly broken stuff in
-rc3. And an ALSA update.
And I'll be offline for a week, so have fun with this, and if you get the
shakes because you want to compile a new kernel every day, there's always
the -mm tree to play with while I'm gone..

Linus now a PPC64 user?
I've read on Slashdot.org that Linus's main workstation is now a PPC64 machine (I'd assume an Apple G5) - is that true? If so, cool! When the main guy himself runs it, I can only imagine things for my G5 should improve!
Actually, probabily not.
Don't believe eveything you read on the 'net. I once read that Bill Gates uses FreeBSD to power his laptop...
Believe whatever you want on
Believe whatever you want on the 'net. As long as it's not on /. :)
Linus on ppc64
This is true. He mentioned this himself some time ago on lkml.
PPC 970
Just wait until some generic PPC 970 consumer boards start to come on the market, that'll be a sweet day. Hopefully they'll be priced reasonably.
PPC64
Will ibm bring this to the market!
Do you have more information about this?
thx
Yes
or so says theinquirer.net - take their word as you will.
http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=14876
I think its likely true, but we shall see.
http://www.theinquirer.net/?a
http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=14932
They don't look like "priced reasonably". So much for people saying Apple's hardware is overpriced ;-)
Did you read the part about "
Did you read the part about "development boards", "reference design"? They aren't intended for consumer-level purchases.
The "Zonked Quokka" release?
The 2.6.5 release is apparently named "Zonked Quokka", does anyone know where this comes from?
Yes
A Quokka is a small macropod that lives only on two small islands off of the WA [western australia] coast (Rottnest Island and Bald Island). See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quokka for a full description with pictures.
I guess that's appropriate
I guess picking animals unique to Australia and its immediate surrounds is appropriate, given that Andrew Morton will be the ultimate maintainer of 2.6.x, and he's an Aussie, although apparently displaced to Palo Alto for now. Lets just not run out of names before Linus finally hands over the reigns completely and heads off to 2.7-land.
The Quokka
A quick googling reveals: http://www.calm.wa.gov.au/plants_animals/mammal.quokka.html
Ask and you shall recieve... if you're still interested.
Zonked is slang for a dead sleep, and Quokka:
"The Quokka is a small marsupial like the forest wallabies and tree kangaroo's of eastern Australia. Very active at night, the Quokka sleep (often in small groups) during the day in the shelter of dense vegetation, and at night time (being sociable)up to 150 adults converge on waterholes...."
